4.5 Why is this so important?

Plaque:
Your teeth are covered with a sticky, colorless film called plaque that can contribute to tooth decay and gum diseases. Plaque contains bacteria. After eating, sugar in food debris will be turned into acids by these bacteria and cause cavities over time.

Another word for cavities is tooth decay. Tooth decay can happen in several areas:
• on healthy teeth;
• on teeth that have fillings where there is a small crack in the filling;
• on exposed tooth roots where gum recesses
